Braided Catheter Shaft

OEM braided catheter shaft manufacturing for torque response, kink resistance, and controlled pushability in interventional catheter programs.

Target Buyer:Best for catheter R&D, process engineering, and sourcing teams that need a custom reinforced shaft instead of commodity tubing.

Capability Highlights

  • Stainless steel, nitinol, and flat wire braid reinforcement options
  • Pitch, pick count, braid angle, and transition-zone tuning
  • Multi-layer shaft stackups with PTFE liner, braid layer, and Pebax or nylon jacket
  • Prototype-to-production support for catheter OEM and CDMO teams

Typical Applications

  • Neurovascular microcatheters
  • Peripheral vascular access catheters
  • Structural heart delivery shafts
  • Steerable and deflectable catheter assemblies

Engineering Focus

  • Braid wire material, diameter, flatness, and tensile behavior
  • Braid density versus flexibility, torque transmission, and collapse resistance
  • Transition from hypotube proximal support to distal braided polymer shaft
  • Reflow window control to prevent liner damage, ovality, and jacket voids

Key Evaluation Matrix

MetricTypical RangeWhy It Matters
Typical shaft OD0.6 mm to 5.0 mm project-dependentOD drives braid equipment setup, liner choice, reflow tooling, and downstream device compatibility.
Braid reinforcementRound wire, flat wire, stainless steel, nitinolMaterial and geometry define torque transfer, kink resistance, radiopacity strategy, and fatigue risk.
Zone architectureSingle-zone, multi-zone, distal soft tip transitionMost high-value catheter shafts fail or win at the transition between pushability and atraumatic flexibility.

RFQ Checklist

  1. Target catheter OD/ID, usable length, and shaft-zone drawing
  2. Braid material, wire size, braid angle, and desired pitch if known
  3. PTFE liner specification and outer jacket polymer preference
  4. Required flexibility zones, torque response target, and kink test method
  5. Prototype quantity, annual forecast, validation documents, and destination

Risk Controls

  • Braid wire imprint or jacket voids: Tune heat-shrink, reflow profile, jacket wall, and pull speed before pilot release.
  • Torque lag or distal whip: Review braid angle, pick count, polymer durometer sequence, and shaft-zone stiffness map together.
  • Prototype cannot scale: Lock equipment recipe, tooling ID, inspection method, and material lot traceability during sample build.

Buyer FAQ

Can you support custom braid patterns?

Yes. RFQs can specify wire count, braid angle, pitch, wire material, and shaft zones. If those are not frozen, we can start from application and OD/ID targets.

Is braided catheter shaft different from hypotube?

Yes. Hypotube is commonly used for proximal push sections, while braided polymer shaft is often used where flexibility, torque, and kink resistance must be balanced.
